    God’s Word Gives Courage

Luke here details for us the voyage that was to take Paul and some other prisoners to Italy and then on to Rome.  The first part of their voyage was slow and difficult not make very much progress, so much so, that winter was now approaching, which is not a good time to be on the sea, because of winter storms.  Paul warns the centurion about the loss that will occur if they leave the port of Fair Havens at Crete.  The centurion was more persuade by the captain of the ship and the majority made a decision to move on to a better port on the island of Crete.  As they attempted this a wind blew them away from the island and they were then caught up in a storm.  This storm lasted fourteen days and was battering and pounding the ship and its passengers.  After the third day of being in this storm at sea, the passengers were losing hope of being delivered from this ferocious storm and all would die at sea.

During this time Paul address them about what is going to taking place.  Paul states that they should have listened to his advice not to have set sail, but since they did not he now has a word for them, because he has received a word from God.  Paul tells them that they are to take courage for there will be no loss of life. I image that during these days of being caught in such a violent storm that those who were believers were doing a lot of praying.  At some point while Paul was alone, possibly praying, God spoke to him through an angel saying do not be afraid for you must stand before Caesar and God will preserve all who are sailing with you, but you will run aground on an island.

God’s Word made all the difference for Paul and these passengers on that ship.  Today, God’s Word can make all the difference in your life.  You may find yourself being battered by the storms of life and carried by the wind, but your courage and confidence will come from God’s Word.  You may think yeah, but I haven’t seen and angel; No and you probably will not because God’s word is more sure than any angel speaking to you.  (2 Pe 1:19)19So we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.

God’s Word is sufficient to give you guidance and direction in all of life storms.  Take courage and trust in His word rather than in yourself or someone else’s words.  God knows exactly what you are facing today and you must take time to know what He is working and bringing about in your life that so you do not need to be afraid.  Therefore today and everyday set time aside where you quietly read God’s Word and speak to Him through prayer.  His word can be trusted.

Prayer:  Father, Your word is faithful and true.  As I examine your word give me insight into what you are doing and planning on doing.  I confess that too many times I trust in my wisdom to get me through difficult times.  I desire to wait patiently for your direction and confirmation even if that means riding in the storm for three or more days before I know your will.  Today, I seek your will for my life and my family and trust that you will guide me faithfully, in Jesus name. Amen.
