3/6/10 John 1

Who is He?

John begins his gospel speaking about the Word and the Light.  What are they or who are they?  Are they refereeing to the same thing or person?  In verse 2 John links the Word to a “He” and in verse 9 & 10 John links the Light to a “He.”  Well, who is He?  The Word was in the beginning in verse 2 and this “He” was in the beginning also.  So let’s investigate who is this “He?”

All things came into existence through Him.  Life and Light are found in Him.  A man named John (the Baptist) came to testify about the Him.  He came into the world.  He enlightened or provided revelation for all men.  He was in the world.   The world was made through Him.  The world did not know Him.  He was an owner.  He came to His own, but they rejected Him.  There are some who received Him by believing in Him and He gave them the right to become children of God.  He became flesh, He dwelt among people, and they saw His glory.  John (the Baptist) testified about His greatness, and His prior existence.  His fullness or complete person was received by all who believed resulting in grace upon grace.  He has explained God.  So who is He?

John the Apostle then goes on to explain the ministry of John the Baptist of whom it was written by the prophet of Isaiah in Isa. 40:3 “I am a voice of one crying in the wilderness, “Make straight the way of the LORD.” So John the Baptist ministry declares to us who the “He” is?  In verse 29 John the Baptist saw Jesus coming and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”   In this first chapter of John we get numerous titles and descriptions of Jesus that help us understand the “He,” Jesus.

You extended grace and truth.  You have been rejected, but I received you.  Jesus You are worthy of all glory.  There is no one like you.  You are God in the flesh.  Be exalted in my life.  You are the maker of all things, you are the giver of life, and in You is my only hope.  My joy is an expression of Your amazing love that my King would die for me, in Jesus name.  Amen.
