    Instructions for Disciples

In the first 10 verse of Luke chapter 17 there are four different instructions given to the Lord’s disciple and those are passed down to anyone who pursues discipleship.  First, a disciple should live a life that does not cause a stumbling block to others opening a pathway to sin.  Sin is inevitable in this fallen world, but when someone claims the name of Jesus and then causes reproach on the name of Christ because of how they behave or treat others there is a great warning here.

Second, a disciple also to battles sin by offering continual forgiveness toward those who sin against them.  There is not disciple that will forgive a greater sin that has been forgiven of him against a holy and righteous God.  Disciples are commanded to confront the sin and encourage repentance and be ready and willing to forgive.  A willing forgiveness is present in a heart before there is repentance and confession from the offender.   Forgiveness is life for a disciple.  There are many of the Lord’s disciples that have spoiling fruit because of an unforgiving heart.

Third, instructions are given to a disciple about their responsibilities toward God.  The disciples in Luke 17:5 ask Jesus for “increased faith.”  Jesus instructs them that it is not the amount of faith, but rather the right kind of faith that is necessary.  Faith properly placed in the Lord is able to accomplish anything.  The question is where is my faith resting?

Fourth, a disciple has a simple responsibility toward God; service.  When a disciple simply carries out what God had commanded and gifted them to, then he should not expect any kind of special praise or reward for his service.  A disciple living rightly serves the Lord with faithful obedience and humility.

Prayer:  Dear great and mighty Father,   I want to follow the instructions that you have laid down for disciples in these verse.  May my walk be so united to You that there is not possibility of cause any loved one or friend to stumble in sin.  Open my heart to a free flowing forgiveness as I continue to experience from You.  See that my faith is properly placed upon You in all things.  Strengthen me in my service for You and I ask that I would hear you instructions and obey them in faithful obedience and humility, In Jesus Name.  Amen.
