    Treasuring

    (Lk 2:19)19But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.

    (Lk 2:51)51And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart.

    Mary the mother of Jesus is described here in Luke 2 as treasuring the things that surrounded her firstborn son. Let each of us treasure the right things in our lives.   I am often reminded that time is quickly marching on as I look at my children.   I have been reminded yet again today to treasure the time that I have with my children and family.  Children are certainly a priceless treasure, because there is no dollar amount that you can place on your children.  Treasure the things that your children say, treasure the things that your children do, treasure the time spent with them.

    There are other things that we ought to be treasuring, such as a spouse, extended family, members of our church, friends, co-workers.  Notice the common element is people.  People are priceless and eternal.  Often we take for granted or mistreat the people who are closest to us.  Today is a good day to tell those closest to you that you love them and how much they mean to you.  Tell them before it is expected on Valentine’s Day where most people share hearts, cards, and candy, even if they do not really treasure that person.

    Finally, we as Mary does must treasure Jesus.  Without Jesus we are without comfort, hope, meaning, and ultimate love.  Jesus has shown the greatest love ever shown by taking our place of deserved punishment and banishment.  (Jn 15:13)13“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends. (1 Pe 3:18)18For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;

    Prayer: Our Father, thank you for sending the Lord Jesus Christ.  Thank you for the great salvation that is found in Jesus Christ.  Thank you for the people in my life that teach me what love is really about.  Forgive me when I treasure things above people.  I ask my heart would be filled daily with treasures that money can’t buy.  In Jesus name, Amen.
