    Living Righteously

(Lk 1:6)6They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord.

Zacharias and Elizabeth were childless and they were living righteous lives despite the disgrace they felt for not having been able to conceive.  No matter if the Lord has granted you a spouse or children you do not need to feel for a moment that you are somehow second rate; that is a lie.  We are to all called to live righteous before God no matter what our circumstances.  Zacharias and Elizabeth then are shown great grace by God, as he granted to them a child who will be called John the Baptist.  This precious coupled certainly is overwhelmed with joy that God has answered their years of praying (Lk 1:13-14).

They then have the great responsibility to continue to live righteously that their little boy would grow, learn, and know the things of the Lord.  Zaharias and Elizabeth were the primary spiritual instructors of their son John.  If you are a parent today, you are to be your child’s primary spiritual teacher.  Your daily living will be seen by your children and they will conclude that you are either walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord or you are not.  Parents, you have a great responsibility to shepherd your children.

Singles and childless couples you also have a great role, because there are numerous children that do not have parents that live righteous lives, a child may adopt you as their spiritual parent.  Remember, John the Baptist was given a ministry to turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God and make ready a people prepared for the Lord (Luke 1:16-17).  We have no idea how the Lord may use one of the children in our lives.  Our lives need to display the righteousness of God as parents or adopted parents by the children that surround us.

Prayer:  Father, I praise you for your great and holy commandments.  I ask that I will receive your grace to walk blameless in all the commandments and requirements.  Father, I look to you and your Son Jesus Christ to instruct me in righteousness and it is my prayer that my life will be recognized by my children and the children that surround me to be righteous living.  In Jesus name, Amen.
