Setting your Mind

    Setting your Mind

(Mk 8:33)33But turning around and seeing His disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind Me, Satan; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”

How do we set our mind upon God’s interests rather than man’s?  The single biggest thing is what we spend our time meditating and thinking about (Rom 12:1-2). We can read our bibles every day, attend worship services, even listen to the teaching of Jesus as Peter does here, yet have our interests set upon man or self.  In order to set our minds on the things of God we must understand a couple of things.

    1. God is sovereign.

He is actively working to bring his plans and purposes to their desired end and will do so without fail. If anyone opposes or rebels against his plans that person is guilty of satanic work. Notice the strong rebuke Jesus gives Peter in Mk 8:33.

    2. God invites.

He is willing for individuals to join Him. His great and glorious work is that of bringing all creation to a crescendo of praise to Himself. So rather than being enamored and excited with the things that the entire world can offer, deny yourself and take up your cross and follow Jesus. As you follow Jesus you can expect great opposition from those who oppose and rebel against God’s plans and will.

    3. God provides the tools.

So how do we set our minds on God’s interests?  First, you must repent and confess that you have been consumed with your interests over His. You do this by simply admitting you been wrong and now invite Him to be Lord of your life. As soon as you do this the God of the universe with take up residence in your heart by the Spirit.  The Spirit will begin teaching and leading you to set your mind and affections on the things of God rather that the things of man.  The Spirit will then use the scriptures in your life to transform your mind by instructing and guiding you to know what God is doing and desiring.  After repentance you also have the ability to pray by the Spirit through Jesus to God the Father about His great and mighty interests which do not change, but do change you.

Prayer:  Father I praise you for your sovereignty in all things.  I desire to work with you and have my mind set upon your interests rather than my selfish ones.  Be patient with me as I continue to grow in my understanding of your interests.  Rid my life of self and preoccupation with the things of this world and turn my heart and mind toward your great will.  Thank you for the all that you have provided for my mind to be in tune with yours. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Colossians 3:1-3 says "1Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. 2Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. 3For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God."  I am deeply challenged when I reflect on my motivations throughout the day and realize that I am often swept away by the breeze of the "temporal."  However, Christ's teachings are replete with a focus on the eternal.  I think that, in light of scripture, it is imperative for us to train our minds to prioritize the eternal intentions of God as our first and foremost interest.  He desires for His Creation to give Him the glory that only He deserves.  May we flood God's heart with praise as we encourage each other to pursue the expansion of His Kingdom with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength.

Well said. Rather, well written. Thanks for your comment.  Here are some more scriptures to prod us on to eternal things.

    (Mt 6:21)

21for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

    (Mt 6:24)

24"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.

    (Mt 6:33)

33"But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
