1/22/10 Matthew 25
The Olivet Discourse Part 2
In chapter 25 we read two parables and a third passage that is not technically a parable. This first parable stresses the point for everyone to be ready for the return of Jesus. We know from chapter 24 that he will return, but we do not know the time that He will return. Therefore we must be on alert and ready for his return at any time.
The second parable stresses the point that all individuals are to be responsible and faithful with possessions provided by the Master. People are to use the Master’s possessions in such a way that the result should be increase and improvement with the goal of returning them and more back to the Master. I believe one of the greatest things that a person could here is “Well done, good and faithful slave.” Am I currently using my master’s possession in a faithful and responsible way?
The final passage describes the judgment that will take place when Jesus returns. He will sit on his glorious throne and will begin to render judgment. The good works that have been done, by those on His right, are not required for entrance into the kingdom, they are the proof that they are part of the kingdom. Jesus says; “Unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (Jn 3:3). Is the burden of proof evident in your life? These good works in this passage are done when an individual lives out the two great commandments (Mt 22:37-20). When we love God rightly the result will be loving our neighbors rightly. A genuine love results in actions that are done for those who are needy, whether it be hungry, thirsty, a stranger, naked, sick, or in prison. Obviously, this list is not the limit to those in need but just a sample. A pertinent question today is how will I respond to those in Haiti?
Prayer: Father prepare my heart to love you and love my neighbor. When I encounter those who are needy or made aware of situations that you expect me to respond and attend to, may I be found faithful and responsible. Give me a heart of generosity to those in need and to live opposite of a heart of greed. In Jesus name, Amen.
