1/21/10 Matthew 24
The Olivet Discourse
Matthew 24 and 25 are referred to as the Olivet Discourse, because Mt 24:3 states that Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives when he gives his discourse (speech, talk, sermon) on the two questions the disciples ask in Mt 24:3. “When will these things happen?” and “What will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?”
Matthew 24 is one of the most difficult and debated chapters in the entire Bible to interpret. The reason is because it is difficult to know where Jesus answer makes any definitive breaks between the two questions. The two questions involve the fall of Jerusalem and the Second Advent (coming). When interpreters make clear breaks in the verses, a problem arises to hold all the verses consistent with one another, without defining words in unusual ways.
Rather than getting discouraged as you read this passage and throw up your hands in defeat, there are some comforting things that we can take from this passage of scripture.
1. Jesus knows exactly the future of these things.
2. Jesus says; “See that you are not frightened” in v6 and we can take great comfort in that.
3. Jesus encourages us to persevere regardless of persecution, apostasy, betrayal, false prophets, lawlessness, and love grown cold.
4. Jesus states that “gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world” that is what we are to be doing.
5. Jesus will come with power and great glory v27, v30. It will be unmistakable.
6. Jesus words will not pass away and they will be fulfilled. v35
7. Jesus says; “Be on alert” therefore we can pray come Lord Jesus.
So while we may not understand or disagree about how to interpret Matthew 24 we are encouraged to live peacefully, courageously, faithfully, and expectantly while our Lord is away.
Prayer: Father you know the times and ages from eternity past, to eternity future, and I rest in the fact that you are just, faithful, merciful, and gracious. You are to be praised for your wisdom and sovereignty in all things. I wait for You and Your timing when you will reveal to the whole world the Son of Man and His coming. Give me the faith to persevere no matter what obstacles I may face, always being ready for the Lord Jesus’ coming. Even so come Lord Jesus. Amen
