1/19/10 Matthew 22
Another Question
(Mt 22:42)42“What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” They said to Him, “The son of David.”
We have noticed that Jesus asked Peter specifically and those who were present in Mt 16:13, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” In Mt 21 the people in Jerusalem, upon the arrival of Jesus, were asking “Who is this?” Today, Jesus asks the crowd (Mk 12:37), and specifically, but not directly the Pharisees; “What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?” The Pharisee’s had heard the children and people chanting yesterday “Hosanna, to the Son of David,” a direct reference to the Messiah. The question that he indirectly asks the Pharisee’s here is to help them put the pieces together from the scriptures that Jesus is the Son of David, which means that Jesus is the Christ or Messiah. Therefore, Jesus is not simply a man, but deity, superior to David, and is Lord and King.
Jesus is specifically targeting the Pharisees, because at that time they were the conservatives that boasted in holding to the Scriptures. Jesus shows them that they have misinterpreted a very important text concerning the Messiah in Psalm 110.
Prayer: Father in Heaven, thank you for revealing to me that Jesus is not simply just a man, but the God man. I ask for the Spirit’s help in correctly interpreting the Scriptures, so that others may understand that Jesus is not only a man or a good moral teacher, but He in fact is the God man. Amen
