1/9/10 Matthew 11 – Different Methods - Same Message
In this chapter Jesus teaches us the significance of John the Baptist ministry. I would like to focus particularly on Mt 11:18-19. Today, there are numerous discussions, debates, and even damaging arguments over what is acceptable in the areas of worship and outreach. Many cry and lament for that “old-time religion” while others have an attitude of “anything goes as long as it works.” We must strike the right balance, in the right places, at the right time, as for our methods. We can only do this when we are being guided by the Spirit of God, who authored the unchangeable message. The Spirit has used and will continue to use various methods and means for the message to be proclaimed.
These verses indicate to us that John the Baptist and Jesus had very different methods in reaching people. John could be seen as too hard, strict, and legalistic, while Jesus seems to be way too tolerant and accepting of the worst of sinners. What links John and Jesus is the same message; “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Mt 3:2, 4:17. We can expect opposition not matter what method we employ when we are preaching the message of repentance and salvation in the name of Jesus only. Both John and Jesus where criticized by those who rejected their message. Those who are unwilling to confess their sin and acknowledge their need, will always seek to turn the spotlight away from their dark soul and on to items that are significant, but not absolute. I wonder how many who call themselves “Christians” are guilty of making the methods predominate and not the message?
Prayer: Father, Son, and Spirit, give us Your knowledge, understanding, and wisdom to communicate a clear and distinguishable gospel message that is not confused with any method employed. Give us a heart of compassion for those who attack the methods or the messengers and try to ignore the message. Amen.
